Provigil (Modafinil)

Created, manufactured, and marketed by Cephalon Inc., Provigil is the only FDA approved drug used to promote alertness. It is structurally different from every other Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant and available in both 100mg and 200mg dosages.

Provigil Side Effects include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

Extreme Rash and side effects, symptoms of allergic reactions:

  • Skin irritations, lesions, rashes etc.
  • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
  • Eosinophilia -drug rash
  • Sores anywhere on the body, including in the mouth
  • Angioedema
  • Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, or neck
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Change in voice (hoarseness)

The side effects listed below were reported in 5% or more of patients:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Upper Respiratory Infection/ chest pain
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • May lead to dependence
  • Nervousness
  • Disruption of sleep patterns

You may experience none, some, or all of the above symptoms when taking Provigil. If the side effects you experience do not subside or cause you great discomfort or pain, consult your physician immediately.

Prescription for Provigil:

To facilitate alertness in order to oppose excessive sleepiness and the tendency to randomly fall asleep by conditions such as:

  • Obstructed Sleep Apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)
Unlike most CNS Stimulants, Provigil only affects the portion of the brain that affects awakeness, leaving the rest of your CNS to function normally without being affected.

FDA Approved Uses for Provigil

Provigil was approved in 1998 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness for children and adults 16 years of age and older. It is the only FDA approved drug to treat sleepiness.

Provigil Warning for Off-Label Use

Defined as the practice of prescribing a drug for a condition other than what it is indicated for, off-label use is becoming more common in the medical field. Provigil has been known to be administered to gerontology patients to assist in memory decline, military personnel to increase short-term memory abilities as well as alertness, and patients who suffer from the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Provigil Drug Contraindications

Use of Provigil is not recommended in patients who have, or currently suffer from:

  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Issues surrounding the use of CNS stimulants
  • Mental illness concerns

If you suffer from those listed conditions and are taking Provigil you may be susceptible to several severe side effects. All patients are encouraged to notify their physicians with any preexisting conditions prior to beginning a prescription regimen.
