Legal Issues, Lawsuits and News on NuvaRing: April 1, 2008

More than 50 lawsuits have been filed against Organon and its related entities. The lawsuit at issue here, filed in Essex County, New Jersey, names Organon USA Inc. as a defendant as well as Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., Organon International, Inc., Akzo Nobel NV, Organon Biosciences, N.V., and Schering-Plough Corporation.

Kelly Bozicev, a 32-year-old married mother of two young children, apparently suffered the utmost side effect from NuvaRing. She was prescribed NuvaRing in May of 2007, and in December of 2007 she suffered a seizure. She was rushed to the hospital but became unresponsive en route, and was killed by a massive pulmonary thromboemboli due to deep vein thrombosis in the pelvic veins according to an autopsy.

The lawsuit filed not only alleges that Mrs. Bozicev died as a result of using this product, but that those associated with NuvaRing were aware of the risks presented by this product and even concealed this knowledge from the public.

The NuvaRing Birth Control Product – What to Watch For:

Recent news has not been good for Organon USA, the manufacturer and distributor of the NuvaRing birth control product.  Although the product had been approved for use by the FDA several years ago, recent events have shown that the NuvaRing could cause serious side effects.  This proposition is bolstered by the fact that 37 lawsuits have been filed against Organon USA around the country, and some of the injuries that were alleged to have been caused by NuvaRing have been devastating and life-threatening in nature.

Below is a brief look at the side effects that have been linked to NuvaRing followed by symptoms to watch for if you have been using the product.  If any of what’s about to be shared with you sounds familiar, you need to seek immediate medical attention and then contact a defective products attorney.

The Known Side Effects of the NuvaRing:

The basis for the potential for side effects associated with NuvaRing is how the product works in the first place.  NuvaRing is a product that is placed inside the vagina and worn for one week.  The woman replaces the NuvaRing with a new one every week for three weeks, and she does not need to wear one during the fourth week.
The NuvaRing releases the hormones estrogen and progestin into the woman’s system, and these hormones at higher-than-normal levels have proven to be extremely effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies.  However, long-term exposure to these high levels of estrogen and progestin have also shown a tendency to lead to blood clots and pulmonary embolisms, which are blockages of the pulmonary artery.

The Symptoms and Results

There are several side effects that could be a signal to you that NuvaRing is causing problems.  Examples of them include difficulty breathing or chest pain, coughing blood, severe headaches, severe abdominal pains, breast lumps, persistent fatigue, pain in the arms and/or legs and several others.  There are also less serious side effects involved, including vomiting, rashes, cramps and depression.
The results of these side effects, if they signify a blood clot, are extremely severe.  Blood clots always lead to disastrous results if they’re not treated quickly, and these results include the loss of limbs, heart and brain problems including heart attacks and strokes, and in some cases death of the patient.

Legal Options if Injured by a NuvaRing

If you have used the NuvaRing product and have experienced any side effects, contact a doctor immediately to receive a full medical evaluation.  Subsequent to your evaluation, contact a defective products attorney to begin the process of evaluating your legal rights and options.
