Normal Saline Flush Syringes

Normal Saline Flush Syringes - Beware of Potential Side Effects

In recent weeks, B. Braun Medical, Inc., based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, initiated a voluntary nationwide recall for its product known as Normal Saline Flush syringes.  The reason that B. Braun, Inc. decided to take this step is because customer complaints spurned an investigation into the product, and this investigation revealed that there is in fact a contaminant present in all units within the lot whose label ends with the letters “SFR.”

Below is a look at the potential side effects that can result in using a contaminated unit of this product, followed by symptoms to watch for to make sure you get the medical attention you need as soon as possible.  If you have suffered from the use of Normal Saline Flush syringes, contact a defective products attorney immediately to schedule an initial consultation.

FDA Information on Normal Saline Flush Syringes

According to the FDA’s press release issued in conjunction with B. Braun, Inc., there are two side effects of which to be wary – one is more likely to occur and the other is not altogether likely, but still possible.  Regardless of which side effect that takes hold, each of them are considered extremely serious conditions.

The first side effect linked to this contaminant is phlebitis and/or damage to vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart and lungs.  Phlebitis is an inflammation of a blood vessel or vessels, and this can lead to other serious circulatory problems, including damage to organs.

The second and less likely side effect that could occur is a pulmonary embolism or silicone embolism syndrome, which could cause severe injury and/or death.  Pulmonary embolisms are blockages of a pulmonary artery, which can lead to heart problems and/or strokes.

Symptoms to Watch For:

If you have used this product, there are several symptoms that will generally present themselves early in the process, usually within 24-48 hours within use of the contaminated product.  These symptoms include pain or redness in the injected area, swelling in the same area and/or a hardening of the vein normally used in injections.  Symptoms for pulmonary embolisms are much more severe, including shortness of breath, fainting, severe chest pains and difficulty breathing in general.

Your Next Step if Hurt or Injured:

Since the particular contaminant found in the lot in question is considered medical grade silicon, one needs to guard against this substance entering the system.  If you experience any of these symptoms after using the product, seek immediate medical attention and then contact a defective products attorney to evaluate your legal rights and options.
