Prescription drugs have never been more prevalent in society, as medical advancements and increased amounts of research and development have both led to more people depending on new forms of medication to treat their conditions than ever before. While many of these advancements are positive in nature, every new drug hits the market with some degree of risk, and recent news has shed light on another prescription drug that’s been linked to serious problems.
That drug is known as Cefepime, which is manufactured by Bristol-Meyers Squibb. Cefepime has been used to help patients treat bacterial infections, and it’s generally administered via injection. Usually, a patient’s doctor will give the first injection to the patient, and beyond that initial step, many patients simply follow the instructions given to them and administer subsequent injections on their own.
The types of infections that have been treated by Cefepime include bacterial infections of all types, including infections of the urinary tract, genitals, skin, respiratory system, bones and joints, among others. Cefepime is considered to be part of the β–lactams, which is a common classification for anti-biotic drugs.
Unfortunately for many, Cefepime has come under fire in recent weeks due to one publication’s article in particular. The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a medical industry publication, published an article that detailed statistics from a study that involved Cefepime. Needless to say, these findings were quite disturbing and prompted action from the government.
Basically, the journal noted that people who were taking Cefepime were shown to have a higher probability of unexpected death as a result of using it. The statistics prompted action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and at this point, the FDA has announced that it is working with the manufacturer to complete four months of additional study. In the meantime, the FDA has also released a warning letter addressed to all medical professionals alerting them to the potential issue and advising them to internalize the risks involved with this medication given the recent findings.
^ Back To TopIf you are taking Cefepime, you need to seek immediate medical attention even if you haven’t experienced any side effects to this point. If you have suffered as a result of using Cefepime, you need to contact a defective drug attorney immediately to schedule an initial consultation. You have legal rights and options that could be available to you, but you’ll need a defective drugs attorney to make that determination.
